I traveled down to Columbia, SC over the weekend to shoot the Kentucky-South Carolina football game for Kentucky Sports Radio. The game day atmosphere was fantastic. Both teams were undefeated going into the game, and Williams-Brice Stadium was rocking!
Despite the raucous crowd and a rough start to the game, the Wildcats made my trip memorable by winning the game 23-13.
As a bonus, I had the pleasure of seeing some South Carolina friends before the game.
Dr. Bill Brearley is a well-loved family practice physician who has practiced in Lexington, SC for over 40 years. A few years ago, both of us joined a company called Marathon Health to help change the face of quality health care delivery in this country. We’ve met at various meetings and both of us work hard at our real jobs improving the health of those lives entrusted to us. It was a fabulous treat to meet up with Bill who picked me up in an old golf cart and drove me to his family’s tailgate party before the game, proving once again why everyone who knows him thinks he’s such a super guy.
Here’s a photo of Dr. Brearley and his wife at the game. Luckily for me, they didn’t have a lot to cheer for, as the Gamecocks laid an egg. If you don’t believe me, just take a look at the faces around them. The way South Carolina played, I’m surprised Bill was able to force a smile.
I also got to see Stephen Denemark and his beautiful family. Stephen is a die-hard South Carolina fan, and I met him for the first time before the SC-UK game in 2010 when some mutual friends invited him to my tailgate. We’ve only met 3 times, but they’ve all been great times tailgating before UK-South Carolina football games. He’ll always be welcome at my pre-game gatherings as he’s gone out of his way to make me welcome at his. Nothing better than college football Saturdays! As great as it was to see my beloved Cats win a tough SEC road game, it was even better to catch up with some great people, even if they do cheer for the wrong team.
