Catching fish and photos in Ketchikan

If you know me, you know I love Alaska. It’s the perfect vacation for me, combining my passions for fishing and photography. I arrived in the 49th state for the first time in the summer of 2011 and stayed at a remote king salmon fishing camp on the Nushagak River before traveling to Homer for some halibut fishing. Needless to say, I was caught more and better fish than I ever have in my life and was hooked for life. I am eager to make my 7th fishing trip to Alaska this July.

Last summer was my first trip to Ketchikan, the state’s southernmost city , and only a 2 hour flight from Seattle. The quaint seaside town lived up to its billing as the “Salmon Capital of the World,” as we caught our limits of kings and silvers every day.

But the fishing just isn’t limited to salmon. We got some great halibut and black rockfish too.

My son Grayson proudly posing with his catch. Nobody loves to eat halibut more than he does.
My friend Mont Dawson is always dropping the halibut!

As good as the fishing is, what makes this trip so special for me is the opportunity to take unbelievable photos.

We got incredibly close to whales.
This image of the Sultan salmon trawler is of my favorite photos I’ve taken in my life. While fishing for salmon, I happened to notice the bright red fishing boat off in the horizon. Realizing how striking it was, as it got closer, I snapped a few pics. The colorful boat against the calm blue waters and pretty blue skies created a pleasing, peaceful image that looks great on my wall and reminds me of a happy place, and some really big and tasty fish.
